How To Unblock Drains DIY
Here are a few simple DIY tips on how to unblock drains at home.
One of the drains that gets blocked the most in a household is the sink, this can be caused by either a solid blockage or a grease build up in the pipes. Here is a helpful tip that will have that dirty dishwater down the pipes and out of your kitchen or bathroom in no time.
What you will need:
A wad of cloth or tissue paper.
A plunger.
Hot water.
Degreasing soap.
Step 1:
Block the overflow if there is one: Near the rim of many sinks, especially in the bathroom, is a small hole to help with water overflow in the case of a tap being left running. Block this hole firmly with a damp cloth or a wad of damp tissue paper to stop water spurting out while you plunge.
Step 2:
Plunge: Place your plunger directly over the drain hole and repeatedly press it down and release to force a spurt of water through the pipes and remove any blockages.
Step 3:
Rinse: Once the blockage is removed rinse out the sink with hot water and a little degreasing soap to remove any leftover gunk from the pipes.
Another drain that can become blocked in a household is the toilet. Everyone knows that this can be incredibly unpleasant and embarrassing so here is a simple drain unblocking tip to solve the situation as quickly as possible.
What you will need:
Rubber gloves.
Toilet plunger.
Bucket.
Chemical cleanser.
Toilet auger or flexible wire.
Disinfectant.
Step 1:
Empty the bowl: This will be an unpleasant task but it is necessary, don your rubber gloves and empty out the bowl of the toilet as much as you possibly can.
Step 2:
Check the drain: Outside where the drain from your toilet leaves the building there should be a drain cover nearby. Open the drain cover and check for water, if there is no water in the chamber the blockage is between the toilet and the drain. If there is water in the chamber then the blockage is further along.
Step 3:
Plunge: Toilet plungers are similar to normal plungers except that they are shaped to fit the bowl of the toilet. Seat the toilet plunger in the bowl and pump the water through the drain to dislodge blockages.
Step 4:
Use an auger or flexible wire: If the blockage has not loosened it may be too compacted to be removed with a plunger. If this is the case you may need to use an auger or long flexible yet strong piece of wire, push the auger through the drain until it reaches the blockage then use it to dislodge the blockage. Afterwards you can use the plunger again to push the loose blockage out of the drain.
Remember: a chemical cleanser can be used to dissolve wads of toilet paper that get jammed or some lighter blockages. Always disinfect the toilet and any other areas that were affected by the blockage.
